What exactly are you celebrating?

J.i.L reader beth, has posed a very good question that I want to re-post for general discussion. She ask "if a Christmas (or even "Holiday") celebration is not religious in nature. What exactly are these people celebrating?"
My wife and I discussed it some and wondered if it might not have to do with the over commercialization of Christmas causing people to disassociate it with Christ Birth.
This is certainly one of several causes, but I still have to wonder…what is going on in the mind of someone who does not believe in Christ when they celebrate Christmas? What exactly are they celebrating?

I understand your point about commercialization. It is kind of like when we dont have to work on President's Day - do we really celebrate these past presidents? No, its just another day off. Or how people who havent paid a price for their country may look at Memorial Day as just a great weekend to take a vacation.

Well, yes and no in regards to celebrating the presidents or the vets. Those days are specifically set up to celebrate those people. So why is Christmas no longer a holiday to celebrate the birth of Christ?
